how is air quality measured?
when you have a fever,the first thing doctors do is measure your temperature whith a thermometer. to determine if the air over a city is clean or not,surface instruments and satellites measure five major pollutants and rate them on a scale from 0 to 500, much like a thermometer would. these instruments measure the amout of carbon monoxide,sulfur dioxide,nitrogem dioxide,groud-level ozone and air bone particles (PMs).the last two represent the greatest risk to human health in places like the USA . they also form smong, a cloud of pollution.
the main causes of the environmental problems are population growth,unsustalble and inefficiet use of resources,poverty and failure to include the environmental costs of resources use in the market prices of good services.
among the main negative impacts caused by men,we can mention the decrease of water sources,extinction of especies ,flood,erosion,pollution,climate change,destruction of the ozone layer,acid ray,worsening of the greenhouse effect and destruction of habitats.

how fast has the world population grown?
humans have been roaming the Earth for millennia but our population was quite stable for a long time. in a long peorid of time, the world´s population grew from 4 million to 1 billion people in 1800. however,it only took us 220 more years to reach 7 billion!
The highest growth rate was from 1950 to 1987.In only 37 years the global population went from 2.5 billion to 5 billion.The places whith the highest growth rates were North America and America Latina.but Asia still holds the majority of the world´s population.
The main activities that cause environment impacts on the planet are mining,agriculture,energy,productions,transport,civil constructions such as roads and cities,as well as chemical industries
